The Old Town heart of the city
Lyons and the Renaissance, the traboules (alleyways), etc..
By the beginning of the sixteenth century, Lyons had truly become the capital of the French Renaissance for a number of reasons: it was a cosmopolitan, free-thinking city, the gateway to Italy and was first to benefit from artistic, architectural and intellectual influences which lead to a pleasant way of life. “Vieux Lyon”, the Old Town, became the seat of civil and religious government (the Palais du Gouverneur and the Archevêché) and the economic centre (fairs, merchants and banking in the “Change” (Exchange) district).
This district therefore became the place to live and for almost a century building, developing and modernising houses never stopped. Wealthy families (the Gadagne’s and the Medici’s) had luxurious mansions or high-quality apartments built on the original dwellings of the Old Town. Nearby Italy, with its antiquities and its own Renaissance, naturally influenced architectural style.
